Her book A Segregated Romance is about Carolina, a 15 year old girl whose race is mixed African American and white. She lives with her mother, but not her birth father. The book takes place during the civil rights movement.  Carolina falls in love with a white boy named Lewis.  This leads to secrets and a whole mess of difficult events. The book revolves around the discrimination she expiriences and how she deals with it.
